What is a potboard table?

A potboard table is an antique base featuring an open lower shelf positioned close to the floor. Cabinet makers originally designed this shelf to hold heavy ceramic dishes and kitchen ware. Over time, these utility tables transitioned into domestic dining and serving spaces, particularly within country houses and provincial kitchens.

How do I identify a games table?

Games tables feature specialised tops inlaid with wood veneers, brass, or marble to form chess, checkers, or backgammon boards. Many examples include hinged leaves that fold open or rotate to reveal a green baize playing surface. Beneath the top, manufacturers often integrated concealed compartments or small drawers to store playing pieces and dice.

How do I care for antique timber?

Maintaining antique timber requires placing tables away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the wood from splitting or fading. Regular application of natural beeswax preserves the polish and nourishes the dry grain. Avoid using silicone-based sprays, as these chemical agents build up on the surface and damage historic French polish or waxed finishes.

How can I date an antique table?

Dating relies on examining the secondary timbers used in drawer linings, the tooling marks left by hand saws, and the style of the leg supports. Georgian and Regency pieces typically show hand-cut dovetails and solid mahogany or oak construction. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples often incorporate machine-cut elements and varied veneer choices like burr walnut or rosewood.
