FAQs

A Georgian corner washstand is a specialized piece of furniture designed during the 18th and early 19th centuries to fit snugly into room corners, originally used for personal washing and grooming before plumbed bathrooms became common.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany or oak, featuring dovetail joints, turned legs, and often incorporating small drawers or tiers for holding ewers, basins, and soap.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, traditional patination, and hardware matching 18th-century manufacturing methods.

This type of furniture can be utilized in modern settings as a functional corner display unit or plant stand, adding architectural interest and warmth through its dark wood tones.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
