Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This late Georgian gentleman's washstand is constructed from mahogany with contrasting boxwood stringing and line inlay. The dark brown timber surfaces show visible grain patterns, polished to a warm finish. The piece stands on four square tapering legs supporting a lower section containing two drawers with small circular brass pull handles, the lower one operating as a pull-out commode holder. Above this sits a single cupboard door fitted with a brass ring handle on the left, hinged on the right with exposed brass hinges. The upper section includes a single dummy drawer across the top and a hinged split-lid top that opens to reveal a fitted interior. Hand-turned roundels appear beside the upper drawer keyhole and above the cupboard door. Measuring 86 cm in height, 47 cm in width, and 47 cm in depth, this functional item provides compact storage. Today, this traditional washstand serves well in modern interiors as a bedside cabinet, a hallway catch-all table, or a compact display stand in a living room or study. The hinged top and internal compartments offer practical storage for small accessories, while the flat surface supports lamps, books, or decorative objects. Placed against a wall in a bedroom or hallway, the piece introduces period character and historic styling without occupying a large footprint. The clean lines of the square legs and the geometric boxwood stringing coordinate easily with both contemporary and traditional room schemes.

FAQs

A Georgian gentlemans washstand is an 18th or early 19th-century cabinet designed for personal grooming. It typically features a split hinged top that opens to reveal a wash basin aperture, alongside cupboards and drawers for shaving accessories and water vessels.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid and veneered Cuban or West Indian mahogany. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, and decorative accents often featured boxwood stringing, ebony inlay, and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass drop or ring handles, and natural shrinkage marks in the wood. The interior often retains circular cut-outs designed to hold ceramic washing basins and soap cups.

An antique washstand can be repurposed as a compact bedside table, a hallway storage unit, or a drinks cabinet. It functions well in contemporary settings by providing warm wood tones and hidden storage.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent wood movement and veneer cracking.
