A canterbury is a piece of nineteenth-century furniture originally designed to hold sheet music, books, and periodicals. It typically features vertical partitions and often includes a low drawer.

These items were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, frequently featuring turned wooden spindles and brass castors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit traditional joinery techniques, hand-carved fretwork, period-appropriate timber patination, and hardware such as brass castors consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

Placed beside a sofa or in a study, a canterbury functions practically as a magazine or vinyl record holder while adding period character and rich wooden texture to the room.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
