Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Front cabriole legs with pad feet: furniture design typical from around 1720.
Arched fielded panels across the back: regional joinery from the 18th century.
Pegged mortise and tenon joints: traditional framing before modern fastenings.
Drilled holes in the seat rails: early method for a rope-strung seat.
Wear and softening along the armrests: decades of hands resting on the oak.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th century West Country oak settle is an English vernacular piece of furniture. It is constructed from dark brown oak with a polished finish and stands on cabriole front legs with tied stretchers. The back features five raised fielded panels with arched tops, complemented by open curved armrests and a long seat cushion upholstered in a multicoloured patterned fabric. Minor imperfections are visible across the wood surfaces, reflecting its age. The settle measures 104 cm high, 182 cm wide and 66 cm deep. Position this wooden bench in a hallway, kitchen or living room to add traditional character to an interior. The long seat provides generous room for sitting, while the high panelled back offers solid support. The rich timber tones and patterned textile seat suit country house and rustic schemes alike.

A panelled back settle is a long wooden bench featuring a high back constructed with framed timber panels, historically crafted in regional Britain to draught-proof seating areas beside open hearths.

Traditional settles were predominantly crafted from solid native hardwoods such as oak or elm, employing mortise and tenon joinery along with fielded back panels and turned or cabriole legs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, wooden pegged joints, uneven historical wear, and natural patination particularly across the armrests and base stretchers.

Place the settle in a wide entry hall, boot room, or open-plan dining space, pairing the deep timber tones with neutral textured linens or contemporary art to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Dust regularly with a clean, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish, ensuring placement remains away from direct radiator heat sources.
