Antique Mahogany Washstand with Drawer and Ring Turned Legs

19th century
Description

A regency period mahogany washstand c1820 with ring turned legs and a central tier with a drawer. The legs are united at the bottom by a shaped x-frame stretcher. An ebony line detail adds definition to the drawer front and the upper rail. The washstand is a useful size and would make a lovely bedside table or is large enough to use as a side table in another room.

Condition: The washstand is in good solid condition, but does have various marks to the surface of the top and the lower tier, including some ring marks. The brass knob to the drawer is a little bent but appears to be the original handle.

Dimensions:

Width - 54.5cm

Depth - 43.5cm

Height - 76cm

Crossed base stretcher with turned ring: shaped to hold a water ewer.
Ebony line stringing: restrained decorative detail.
Old ring stains on the tiers: traces of basin and jug use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Originating in the eighteenth century, washstands were designed for personal grooming in bedrooms prior to indoor plumbing, featuring tiers to hold water jugs, basins, and soap.

Craftsmen typically used dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, turned supports, and fitted drawers for holding toiletries.

Look for evidence of hand-tooling on drawer linings, hand-carved ring-turned legs, natural wood oxidisation, and structural features like jug rings or basin cut-outs on lower stretchers.

These versatile accent tables work exceptionally well as bedside tables, plant stands, or occasional side tables in living rooms and foyers to add historical character.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol sprays, excessive moisture, and direct sunlight.
