Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Gothic Revival torchere dates from the second half of the 19th century and is made of ebonised mahogany with a dark brown finish. The piece takes the form of a freestanding plant or candle stand standing 94 cm high, featuring a scalloped top edged with egg-and-dart moulding above a central column sculpted as a mythical dragon figure with detailed wings, scales, and claws. The upright rises from a tripod scroll base terminating in carved claw feet. In a modern interior, this highly decorative stand suits placement in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study to display a lamp, vase, or decorative sculpture. The compact footprint makes it practical for smaller spaces requiring architectural interest.

FAQs

Originally designed during the 17th and 18th centuries to support candles or candelabra, a torchere evolved into a decorative tall wooden pedestal used in 19th-century interiors to elevate oil lamps, busts, or botanical displays.

Victorian and 19th-century torcheres were predominantly carved from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with dark stains and hand-polished wax to highlight intricate relief carving.

Authentic period pieces feature evidence of hand-carving tools, hand-turned joints, naturally aged wood patination in recessed areas, and slight asymmetry characteristic of manual artisan construction.

A carved torchere functions as a sculptural accent in a hallway or alcove, providing height when supporting a trailing houseplant, stone urn, or decorative ceramic vessel.

Dust detailed carvings regularly with a soft, dry brush, and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually while keeping the item clear of direct heat sources and high humidity.
