Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Flip-over benches were originally designed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for public transport, such as trams and railway carriages, as well as educational institutions. The pivoting backrest allowed passengers or users to face either direction without rotating the entire heavy iron base.

These benches were typically constructed using durable cast iron frames for structural stability and solid hardwoods or softwoods, such as pine or oak, for the seat and backrest planks.

Authentic period examples feature heavy cast iron end frames often displaying foundry marks, minor surface irregularities from sand casting, and smooth operation of the iron pivoting mechanism holding the backrest.

A flip-over bench functions effectively as seating along a long dining table, in a spacious entrance hall, or placed at the foot of a bed to add architectural contrast to contemporary spaces.

Clean the wood with a slightly damp cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber. Keep the cast iron mechanism free from moisture and apply light machine oil to the pivot joints if movement stiffens.
