Late Georgian Side Work Table with Compartments and Storage

18th century
Description

Beautifully made late Georgian inlaid mahogany work table or could work as a gentleman’s dressing chest, with a fully fitted interior of hidden compartments, boxes, trays, a padded cushion on a hinge and storage below, circa 1830.

Very decorative piece of furniture and just looks fabulous when opened up like this, although it also has a rather lovely single piece of mahogany top too, so looks good with the lid closed too. Note the ink etching to the small central satinwood drawer.

The lower panels are all finished with a champagne pleated silk and a simple braided edge.

Good storage space below the fitted interior and stands on these very elegant square tapered legs with original castors.

All working locks and keys. Originally would have been a very fine ladies needlework or sewing table.

This late Georgian work table dates from around 1830 and follows an English Country House style. Constructed from warm brown mahogany with boxwood stringing, the piece includes brass hardware, working locks and keys, and champagne pleated silk panels with braided edges on the lower sides. Visible details comprise a hinged lid, a fully fitted interior with compartments, boxes, trays, and a padded cushion, plus square tapered legs raised on brass castors. The table measures 72 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Positioned at the end of a sofa in a modern living room or study, the piece provides both surface space and internal storage. The multi-compartment interior makes it practical for organising small personal items, writing materials, or sewing accessories, while the enclosed lower section offers additional concealed storage. The decorative hinged lid allows the interior to remain open for display or closed to present a clean mahogany top surface.

A Georgian work table is a specialised piece of small furniture introduced in the late eighteenth century, primarily designed to store needlework, embroidery, and writing materials. These tables typically feature hinged tops opening to fitted storage sections and often incorporate drawers or lower fabric work wells.

Late Georgian work tables were predominantly constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood. Key decorative elements frequently included fine boxwood or brass stringing, pleated silk or cotton fabric panels, and hand-cast brass hardware or castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction features including hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hinges, wood-framed internal dividers, and hand-turned or square tapered legs. Natural timber shrinkage, historical wear to interior linings, and aged oxidation on brass elements also indicate genuine period construction.

A Georgian work table functions effectively as an occasional side table beside a armchair or sofa, offering compact storage for small everyday items. Its classical proportions and warm timber tones complement traditional living rooms, dressing rooms, or library settings.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and fabric degradation.
