This Victorian hall stand dates from 1900 and is made from warm brown walnut with brass hardware, blue ceramic tiles, and a glass diamond mirror. The upper section carries a scrolled pediment, multiple brass coat hooks, and moulded cornices above the central mirror and decorative blue glazed ceramic tile inlay. Below this sits a central glove drawer with a brass handle, flanked by curved brass rails for canes and umbrellas, all standing on square tapering feet above a lower shelf with drip trays. The structure measures 196 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. Practical for everyday use in a home, this piece fits well in a hallway, boot room, or reception area to store outdoor wear, accessories, and walking gear. The combination of timber, polished metal accents, and decorative tiles provides functional storage while adding period character to an entranceway. Guests can hang coats upon arrival, check appearances in the central diamond mirror, and place wet umbrellas in the lower holders to keep floors dry.

FAQs

A hall stand is a piece of entry furniture developed in the nineteenth century designed to store coats, hats, walking sticks, and umbrellas, often featuring an integrated central mirror and storage drawer.

Victorian and Edwardian hall stands were typically constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, featuring brass hooks, ceramic decorative tiles, and zinc or brass drip pans.

Authentic nineteenth-century hall stands feature hand-carved details, bevelled mirror glass, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, and original brass hardware showing natural age-related patina.

Position the hall stand near the front entry as a functional focal point, styling the central surface with a small dish for keys while utilising the hooks for everyday coats and umbrellas.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain, while ensuring metal drip trays are kept dry to prevent rust or tarnishing.
