This Victorian lamp table dates from 1860 in the English Country House style, formed from burr walnut and walnut in a warm brown tone. The piece has a shaped gallery back decorated with marquetry floral inlay and four upright turned finials, standing above two serpentine shelves. Support comes from solid walnut columns that mix spiral turning with shaped sections, alongside a lower single drawer fitted with two original turned walnut knobs. The entire stand rests on four turned wooden feet with original brass castors. Measuring 67.5 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 38.5 cm deep, this two-tier table fits naturally beside the end of a sofa or in a living room corner as an occasional surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. The compact footprint makes it adaptable for placement in residential interiors where surface area and traditional storage are required.

Victorian burr walnut furniture is characterised by the decorative use of figure-dense walnut veneers harvested from tree burls, often accompanied by intricate floral marquetry, turned supports, and polished finishes during the nineteenth century.

These tables were typically constructed with solid wood internal frames clad in hand-cut veneers, utilizing dovetail joints for drawers, turned spindle columns for vertical stability, and fitted brass castors at the feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut marquetry inlays with subtle variations, period-appropriate joinery such as asymmetrical hand-sawn dovetails, natural oxidation beneath drawer bases, and genuine surface wear on brass fittings.

A Victorian lamp table functions effectively alongside contemporary seating, using the upper surface for task lighting while utilizing the lower tier and drawer for discreet storage.

Maintain burr walnut by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, applying high-grade beeswax polish along the grain, and placing the item away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer lifting.
