Description

A charming and unusually small antique William IV pedestal teapoy or floor standing tea caddy dating from circa 1830 and attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. A very fine quality piece with superb colour and patina to the mahogany and beautifully decorated with gadrooned mouldings typical of Gillows.

With sarcophagus shaped box raised on a tapered turned stem and standing on a pedestal base with quatrefoil platform and carved scroll feet. The hinged lid opens to reveal a fitted interior with its original removable tea container with remnants of its original foil lining and a velvet lined receptacle containing a cut glass mixing bowl.

This is an unusually small example standing only 69cm tall and with only one tea compartment and one mixing bowl, most teapoys having usually at least two caddies and larger in size. A fine and historical piece of early 19th century furniture, would make a wonderful lamp table.

William IV teapoys emerged during the 1830s as specialised freestanding pieces of furniture designed for holding and serving tea, which was an expensive and valued commodity in elite households.

Teapoys were typically constructed from high-grade timber such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring dovetailed box construction, hand-carved central pedestals, and internal compartments for loose tea leaves and mixing bowls.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, original brass or iron locking mechanisms, hand-turned secondary woods, and natural patination consistent with nineteenth-century cabinetmaking techniques.

A teapoy functions effectively as an accent piece or side table in a traditional or eclectic interior, serving as a focal point next to seating arrangements or within a study.

Maintenance requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
