Early 20th-century garden benches often reflect Arts and Crafts or traditional British design principles, prioritising functional craftsmanship, structural honesty, and architectural proportions over excessive ornamentation.

They were typically constructed from dense, natural hardwoods like teak or oak, utilizing traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, dowels, and heavy-duty fixings designed to withstand outdoor weathering.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit natural weathering, genuine patination, makers marks or stamps where applicable, and construction techniques consistent with historical manufacturing periods rather than modern mass production.

Pairing a weathered wooden bench with modern minimalist landscaping, neutral stone paving, or contrasting it against a sleek, contemporary interior creates a balanced juxtaposition of old and new textures.

Teak naturally develops a silvery-grey patina when exposed to the elements; maintaining the wood involves occasional gentle cleaning with soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemical treatments unless deep restoration is required.
