Victorian institutional furniture, such as pieces made for police stations, courtrooms, and workhouses, is characterised by heavy, utilitarian construction designed for durability rather than decorative comfort.

These items were predominantly constructed from heavy domestic hardwoods like solid oak, frequently joined using traditional mortise and tenon methods to withstand rigorous daily use.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine patina from decades of heavy wear, tool marks from hand-working, traditional joinery, and iron fixings consistent with the manufacturing techniques of the period.

An antique wooden bench functions effectively in a hallway or boot room, providing practical seating while introducing historical texture and warmth to modern spaces.

Preservation involves dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without damaging the original surface finish.
