Natural shrinkage gaps at the mitred top frame joints: decades of wood movement.
Crisply carved relief detail with accumulated wax and dust: age and handling.

This antique Chinese side table from the Qing dynasty period dates from 1900 and is constructed from Hong-Mu rosewood and marble. The circular table displays deep chestnut hues across its timber, an inlaid variegated rouge-veined marble top, a carved beaded rim, and a pierced foliage apron with leaf and vine motifs. The four carved square legs terminate in claw feet and are united by curved cross stretchers. It measures 57 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece functions well as a lamp table, coffee table, or plant stand in an empty corner or living room. The solid and sturdy structure shows an aged patina with wear and marks commensurate with its age.

FAQs

Originated during the Qing Dynasty and widely produced for export during the nineteenth century, these occasional tables feature dense hardwood frames inlaid with decorative stone tops. They were traditionally designed to display decorative vases, bonsai, or urns in classic Chinese interiors.

These pieces are typically constructed from indigenous hardwoods such as rosewood (zitan or suanzhi) and hungmu. The tops are fitted with inset panels of natural variegated marble or serpentinite stone, secured into mortise and tenon joinery without the use of metal nails.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, floating panel construction to accommodate timber movement, and crisp openwork aprons. The underside often retains natural oxidisation and visible tool marks, whereas modern reproductions show uniform machine routing.

These tables function as versatile accent pieces, ideal for housing table lamps, sculpture, or indoor plants. The dark timber and organic marble pattern create a strong focal contrast against minimalist contemporary backdrops or eclectic spaces.

Clean the timber with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the lustre of the wood patina. Wipe marble surfaces immediately after spills using pH-neutral cleaners to prevent staining or etching on the stone.
