This 18th century Georgian architects table is constructed from rich mahogany in a warm brown tone, paired with a hand-dyed tan leather insert and polished brass hardware. The design includes a sliding front drawer with a decorative bail handle, square support legs with turned internal columns, and a sliding writing top that reveals internal storage sections. The piece displays visible dark staining on the left side of the main surface, showing signs of prior use. Measuring 70 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 63 cm deep, this multi-functional workspace serves as a practical desk or writing table. Positioned in a gentleman's library or a home study, the table provides dual workspace options through its extendable front section and lift-up leather panel. The clean lines of the square legs and simple framing integrate easily with traditional or period interior schemes. The internal compartments and hidden drawers offer compact storage for stationery and documents while maintaining a neat surface profile when closed.

FAQs

Designed during the 18th century, a Georgian architects table is a specialised writing desk featuring mechanical elements, such as sliding tops or pull-out writing surfaces, originally crafted for draughtsmen, engineers, and architects.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or high-grade mahogany veneers, utilising hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass hardware fittings, and tool-embossed leather writing surfaces.

Authentic 18th-century examples display hand-planed timber construction, period-correct cast brass drop handles, traditional sliding wooden runners, and natural oxidisation on unpolished undersides.

Position the piece in a study, library, or hallway as a functional accent, pairing dark mahogany timber with modern neutral wall colours and contemporary task lighting to accentuate historical craftsmanship.

Dust regularly using a dry microfiber cloth, apply natural beeswax along the timber grain, and avoid placing the desk near direct radiators or heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage.
