Description

The popularity of antique hall benches, like this fine quality Edwardian example in walnut, can be partly attributed to their position within the home. Often placed close to the front door, they provide support before and after the day's endeavors. A place to prepare, rest, chat, and ponder. We have attributed this hall bench to the cabinet makers 'James Shoolbred & co' of London (established 1820s), As you may gather from the images, this finely constructed bench will sit comfortably within both contemporary and period interiors. Its attractive refined design does not signify a lack of strength, far from it. It's elegant yet robust, and in remarkable condition, especially when you consider its function over the previous 100 years of use. This antique hall bench is being sold in a professionally restored condition, and as such, it is now ready to join the day-to-day hustle and bustle of your home.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Edwardian hall furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, often featured lighter proportions and cleaner lines compared to heavy Victorian designs, drawing inspiration from earlier eighteenth-century revivals.

These pieces were typically constructed from timbers such as walnut, mahogany, and oak, utilising traditional joinery techniques including mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned spindle legs, and polished finishes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber grain, natural patina, construction joinery for hand-cut or early machine precision, and any maker stamps or registration marks underneath.

This piece can be placed in an entryway or hallway to provide functional seating, paired with neutral walls and minimal accessories to highlight the natural wood grain and historical craftsmanship.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
