Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the initial design in the late 18th century, a Canterbury is a mobile, low-standing rack designed with vertical partitions. During the Victorian era, these pieces were used primarily in drawing rooms to hold bound sheet music, prints, and periodicals, incorporating a lower drawer for smaller accessories.

Victorian Canterburys were typically crafted from cabinet-grade hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently overlaid with decorative burr veneers. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, turned wood spindle dividers, fretwork or pierced side panels, and brass castors attached to turned legs.

Authentic 19th-century examples display signs of hand construction, including uneven dovetail joints inside the drawers, original brass wheel castors, and natural oxidisation on unpolished underside surfaces. Burr walnut veneers on genuine pieces show distinct grain figure variations and minor natural shrinkage marks along joinery lines.

In modern living spaces, a Canterbury serves as an accent piece beside a sofa or armchair to store oversized art books, magazines, or vinyl records. Its compact footprint and decorative profile allow it to fit neatly into reading nooks or alongside fireplace surrounds without obstructing sightlines.

To protect burr walnut finish, place the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent drying or cracking of the veneer. Dust regularly with a clean, soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the woods lustre.
