Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this piece to the 1860s.
It depicts an elderly man dressed in simple robes with a large sunhat hanging from a neck cord down his back. He has discovered whilst on his travels a large bat and has sat down to examine the creature whilst encouraging it to fly to safety. This figure is of a slightly earlier date to most similar pieces. The subject matter is most appealing and this carving has developed a wonderful patina which is very pleasing to the eye and tactile to hold. It is in good condition with a few very minor light age related shrinkage cracks. Japanese, circa 1860
