Superb Victorian Oak Carving Of Monks

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A wonderful and unique oak carving depicting an elaborate scene with monks in a kitchen. The work remarkably is carved from a single piece of solid oak and in places is inches deep, it would have been a labour of love by a talented carver. The scene depicts monks working in a kitchen, one has tripped and fallen much to the amusement of the others. It is very likely that the carving was inspired by a painting as this genre of jovial monks was popular at the time. The intricacy and detail of the piece is just astounding with pans on the wall, pots on the fire and a barrel of ale. The carving is actually signed to the front ‘Carved by A.Pettitt. 1894. Shoreham’. The scene depicted is titled ‘The Mishap’ and interestingly it also states: ‘Wood found by F.Moore. Brasted’. The whole has a dark stained finish and is in excellent condition. A unique and wonderfully decorative piece.

Overall sizes in inches: 24 ½ by 14 ½ by 3 ½
