Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Antik Dragon Japanese & Other Fine Art

Excellent Japanese Meiji (late 19thC) boxwood netsuke of a coiled rat by Masanao of Ise. A beautifully observed and finely carved example of one of Masanao’s favourite subjects. The charming subject depicts a rat curled up into a ball, one of his left paws scratching his ear and the other clutching his tail that wraps around his body, his rear right limb forming the natural himotoshi through which the cord is threaded. The staining is paler than some examples and the eyes are inset in jet black. Provenance: private Swiss collector. Measures ca 4cm x 3.5cm.

A superb quality and mint condition example of this much prized subject and artist’s work.
