Description

Pair of late C19th/ early C20th bronze bust studies of Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius after Francesco Jerace.

Smart pair of bronze desktop or library busts of the great Roman statesmen and generals , raised on turned socles onto square bases . The characterful detailed studies after the Italian sculptor Francesco Jerace (1853-1937) conveying the characteristic strength and gravitas of the subjects . The verso cast with a facsimile signature of the sculptor to the centre .

Each depicted in traditional military style dress , Julius Caesar wearing a cuirass or beast-plate with a lion-mask , Marcus Aurelius draped with a traditional clasped cloak over a general’s uniform.

Rich consistent patination and colour.
