Scarce C19th Italian Neapolitan ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze reduction of The Drunken Satyr of Herculaneum.

Well-cast model of the bronze statue after the antique ,of the drunken elderly Satyr or faun (“ satiro ebbro “) ,depicted lying naked on a rock upon a lion’s-skin . Excavated from Vesuvius-stricken buried Herculaneum in 1754 from the Villa of the Papyri , where it had adorned a swimming pool in the middle of the perstilium or colonnaded garden. The sculpture depicts a follower of the wine god Dionysus in inebriated repose .

Excellent attention to detail with a rich consistent patina and colour .

The original 1st century BC Roman bronze statue now displayed in the Naples Archaeological Museum in Italy .
