A Chinese Stone Sculpture

17th century
Description

A fine temple guardian lion, Chinese Tang Dynasty 618-907. Grey stone sculpture. Super fierce expressional face with bared fangs. The claws gripping the base from which it is ready to pounce. Lions became more widely depicted in icons during the introduction into China of Buddhism. They have usually been found in pairs guarding both tombs and temples. This particular example is well carved and has a lovely smooth patination over the back and highlights on its face. Both lion and platform carved from a single block of stone
