We love this antique Ushak it is simply stunning, with amazing faded colours, and a wonderful open all over design. From the late 19th century, this circa 1870-1880 carpet is why these decorative carpets from Anatolia are so desirable and collectable. Ushaks were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire. Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and use soft natural dyes. The faded green border colour works so well with the soft reds and muted golden tones.

A wonderful pile is apparent over most of this 140 year old carpet. In very good original condition, with no losses to the outer design and no large repairs. Some small areas of lower wool pile, but nothing significant, most of the carpet has a high pile throughout. No stains or marks to speak of.

Originating from the city of Usak in western Turkey, Ushak carpets are renowned for their soft wool, muted colour palettes, and large-scale floral or geometric patterns that have been integrated into European interiors since the Renaissance.

Traditional Ushak rugs are hand-knotted using local wool on wool or cotton foundations, employing symmetrical Turkish Ghiordes knots to create a soft pile and characteristic subtle sheen.

Authentic antique Ushak carpets typically feature a lower knot density, softened hues derived from natural dyes, a flexible handle, and iconic muted red, terracotta, or celadon tones woven into angular floral motifs.

The understated tones and open-scale patterns of an Ushak carpet provide a grounding element in modern spaces, adding textual contrast alongside contemporary minimalism or traditional timber furniture.
