Antique Ushak Carpet

Description

A lovely soft red background on this open design antique Ushak carpet, using delicate pinks and muted greens with pale blues for the vines.  A wonderful teal blue toned border compliments the overall look to create a fantastic decorative carpet.   Dating from circa 1880-1890 the dyes have mellowed beautifully and this is why decorative carpets from Anatolia are so desirable and collectable.  Ushak's were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and use soft natural dyes. The faded green border colour works so well with the soft reds and muted golden tones.

In general it is in very good pile, some slightly lower areas, with minimal old restoration, a very ancient and handsome looking Ushak carpet ideal for any room.

Ushak carpets originate from the town of Usak in western Turkey, a major centre for carpet production since the fifteenth century. They are characterised by large-scale floral or medallion patterns, soft muted tones, and Ghiordes double-knot construction.

Authentic Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation warp and weft.

Authentic examples feature muted vegetable-dyed colours, a lower knot density compared to Persian rugs, a flexible handle, and characteristic palmette or vine-scroll patterns.

The soft colour palettes and stylized motifs of Ushak carpets allow them to anchor contemporary minimalist spaces, traditional English country interiors, or layered eclectic rooms.
