Antique Ushak Carpet

Description

Ancient Ushak carpet with faded soft pink dyes, dark faded green tones and grey hues, woven in Anatolia in the late 19th with a large scale design.  This carpet has wear and lower areas of pile are but structurally strong and with our strong anti-slip underlay this would make it durable on the floor for another 100 years.  A wonderful faded look and a very decorative antique Ushak carpet available to be viewed at home or at our showroom by appointment, please make contact in your preferred way, we look forward to helping you soon.

Ushak carpets were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and use soft natural dyes. The faded green border colour works so well with the soft reds and muted golden tones.

Ushak, or Oushak, carpets originate from the town of Usak in western Turkey, which has been a major centre for rug weaving since the fifteenth century. They are characterized by soft, muted colour palettes and large-scale floral or medallion patterns.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural dyes were historically employed to produce their soft, varied tones.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical Turkish knots, pliable wool construction, and distinctive muted colours resulting from natural age and light exposure. The reverse side reveals visible knot structure and subtle variations in weave tightness.

The muted tones of an Ushak carpet provide a neutral foundation that harmonises with contemporary minimalist furniture as well as traditional period schemes. Position the carpet centrally to anchor a seating area or beneath a dining table.
