Antique Ushak Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A very beautiful Anatolian Ushak carpet in amazing warm colours.  The condition of this carpet is exceptional with full pile throughout.

The design is very unusual for this type of carpet as it is an Indian Agra design from the 17th century - We have rarely seen this design used in an Ushak carpet,  so it is likely that this was a bespoke order from a private individual,  or maybe an importer who requested the design to be used.

The wool pile is thick and high throughout and woven on a woollen foundation this is a loose and floppy weave which is typical with rugs from this region.

We would happily welcome you contacting us to request a home visit, having visited customers in their own homes for over 30 years. We feel it is vital to view carpets and rugs at home, so you can make the ideal choice, trying various options in a room. A professional, free service we have offered since 1990.

Farnham Antique Carpets are specialists in antique decorative carpets, rugs and runners. Varying from antique tribal rugs woven in the Caucasus to classical Persian carpets dating from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.

Ushak carpets originate from the city of Usak in Anatolia, Turkey, which has been a major centre of carpet production since the fifteenth century. Highly prized by European nobility, these carpets became famous for their large-scale floral patterns and soft wool construction.

Authentic Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade wool on a foundation of wool or cotton warps and wefts. Natural dyes were historically used to produce tones of red, terracotta, blue, sage green, and cream.

Authentic Ushak carpets feature a softer, looser weave compared to Persian rugs, with a lower knot density that gives them a flexible handle. Key indicators include large-scale floral or palmette designs, a silky wool pile, and subtle variations in tone known as abrash.
