Antique Ushak Carpet

19th century
Description

An ancient and interesting Anatolian antique Ushak carpet woven around 1870-1880 with a beautiful leaf and flower design.  The variety of greens and gold tones are wonderful early dyes, the pinks and cherry reds for the background design are a very unusual palette and have faded in areas due to the age of this piece.

Due to the age of this carpet some old areas of restoration are apparent, with some old reweaves at the ends/fringe area.  There are some areas of lower pile in the main field, but no thread bare areas or holes to speak of.  The general pile is very good, with a medium wool pile height on this 140 year old carpet from Ushak in Turkey.

If you would like to request a home visit, we have visited customers in their own homes for over 30 years, so we would love to help you too.  We feel it is vital to view a selection of carpets and rugs at home, this helps you make the ideal choice, trying various options in a room.  This is our free, professional service we have offered since 1990.

Please do view all the additional images, all taken in natural light with no editing. We take time to make sure all our images are as close to viewing the carpet with your own eyes.

Ushak's were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional.  We clean every carpet before offering it for sale and make sure the ends and fringes are secured.

Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger Turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their sometimes softer palette than Persian carpets, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the city of Usak in Western Anatolia, these carpets are renowned for their large-scale floral and medallion motifs, distinct colour palettes, and supple weaving structure developed during the Ottoman period.

Traditional Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile on a wool or cotton warp foundation, utilising Ghiordes symmetrical knots and natural vegetable dyes.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the slight irregularities in hand-spun wool, subtle colour variations known as abrash, symmetrical hand-knotting visible on the underside, and natural dye wear.

A vibrant red carpet anchors neutral seating areas, providing warmth and visual contrast alongside contemporary minimalist furniture or traditional dark wood pieces.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar, rotate annually to balance wear from foot traffic and sunlight, and arrange for professional hand-washing by a textile specialist when necessary.
