Antique Ushak Carpet

19th century
Description

A rare pale green background on this gentle antique Ushak carpet, using delicate pinks for the vines, flowers and border colour.  Wonderful very open all over design, from the late 19th century, this circa 1880 carpet is why these decorative carpets from Anatolia are so desirable and collectable.  Ushaks were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and use soft natural dyes. The faded green border colour works so well with the soft reds and muted golden tones.

In general very good pile, some slightly lower areas, with minimal old restoration, a very old and handsome looking Ushak ideal for any room.

Please Request a Home Visit to see this beautiful Ushak carpet at home, we love to travel, having visited clients and interior designers all over the UK for the last 30 years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ushak carpets originate from the Usak region in Western Anatolia, renowned since the Ottoman era for their soft palettes, large-scale floral lattice patterns, and relaxed hand-knotted wool construction.

Traditional Ushak carpets are woven using hand-spun wool pile anchored on a wool or cotton warp and weft, coloured with vegetable dyes to achieve muted tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinctive softer colour variations known as abrash, spacious stylized palmette designs, a supple feel, and a slightly lower knot density compared to urban Persian rugs.

Designers frequently use these carpets to anchor living rooms or dining spaces, using the muted tones to complement dark wood antiques, upholstered seating, or neutral contemporary furnishings.

Care requires regular vacuuming without a rotating beat-bar, prompt spot cleaning with cold water, the use of a high-quality rug underlay, and periodic professional dry washing by a textile specialist.
