Antique Ushak Carpet

19th century
Description

From the late 19th century this is a wonderful large decorative antique Ushak carpet with amazing burnt orange dyes for the main field, and a soft white large border.  The border comprises of floral designs and vines flowing beautifully throughout this large carpet, using gold tones and muted greens.  An amazing carpet to decorate with in great condition all over.

Ushak carpets were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and use soft natural dyes. The faded green border colour works so well with the soft reds and muted golden tones.

Woven with the famous Garrus design, primarily found on antique Bidjar carpets and rugs from Persia.  This is known as the split arabesque design from the town of Garrus in Bidjar, one of the most famous and desired patterns.  Often seen on fine Tehran carpets as well as used in Anatolia (Turkey) in the late 19th century in Ushak carpets such as this one.

A wonderful pile is apparent over most of this 140 year old carpet.  In very good original condition, with no losses to the outer design and no large repairs. Some small areas of lower wool pile, but nothing significant, most of the carpet has a high pile throughout.

Please request a home visit to see this beautiful antique Ushak carpet at home, we love to travel all over, having visited clients and interior designers all over the UK for the last 30 years.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the town of Usak in western Turkey, these carpets are historical floor coverings celebrated for their distinctive geometric palmettes, soft colour palettes, and fine wool construction dating back to the Ottoman era.

They are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation, employing traditional symmetrical double knots known as Ghiordes knots.

Authentic examples display soft muted tones from natural vegetable dyes, a relatively open weaving density creating a relaxed drape, and subtle color variations known as abrash throughout the pile.

Position the carpet as a central floor anchor in a drawing room or dining area, pairing its terracotta and cream tones with neutral upholstery and dark wood furniture.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a motorized beater bar, rotate the carpet periodically to equalize wear, and arrange for specialized cleaning by a professional textile restorer when needed.
