Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, craftsmen in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) produced furniture that combined European forms with indigenous materials and intricate hand carving. These pieces frequently utilised local dark ebony contrasted with lighter timbers like satinwood to satisfy western demand for exotic tropical furniture.

Tiered etageres and whatnots were commonly constructed from hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, mahogany, or dense ebony. High-end colonial examples often integrated veneer panels of satinwood or calamander and were fitted with turned brass castors at the feet.

Authentic pieces feature true solid ebony or heavy veneers showing natural timber grain rather than ebonised softwoods. Examination of turned uprights, hand-cut joinery, aged brass hardware, and subtle patination on contrasting satinwood panels helps confirm origin and period construction.

An etagere functions as architectural display storage in modern settings without overwhelming the visual space. It can be placed in living rooms or hallways to exhibit art glass, ceramics, leather-bound volumes, or indoor botanical arrangements.

Maintain tropical hardwoods by wiping them regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and keeping them away from direct heat sources or damp environments. Apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original patination and feed the wood grains.
