Description

A fine quality late 19th century (circa 1890) bronze figure of the seated Sappho, her lyre next to her, all supported on a shaped green and black marble base, signed ‘Pradier’ with ‘Susse Freres’ foundry mark.

Sappho was an Archaic Greek poet, particularly known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung and accompanied by a lyre.

The Swiss-French Sculptor Jean-Jacques Pradier (known as James) (1790-1852) was born in Geneva to a Protestant family who had fled France for Switzerland. He was both a gifted painter and talented sculptor, studying at the ‘Ecole des Beaux Arts’ in Paris and later in Rome winning the ‘Pris de Rome’ in 1812 producing many notable statues and sculptures over the years.

This bronze is in very good condition for age and can go straight into a home.
