Description

A finely executed and well patinated pair of bare foot figures in late 18th Century French costume on naturalistic bases each fitted on polished circular Belgian black marble plinths The man holds a bag pipe and the woman a watering can. Each bears the signature of E Blavier (Émile-Victor Blavier) who is recorded as having first studied at the academic schools of Douai, then onto Paris where he was a pupil of the sculptors Toussaint and Calmels . He made his debut at the Salon of 1852 and exhibited for the last time in 1876. The Chartreuse museum in Douai keeps a large number of his works.

The male figure has a height of 30cms including the marble base whilst his companion is a little shorter at 29.5cms. Both marble bases have a maximum diameter of 12.5cms.

Both in excellent condition having wear to high points consistent with age and just minor nibbles to the marble bases.
