C19th Parian-ware Porcelain Bust Study of “The Apollo Belvedere “.

19th century
Description

C19th parian-ware porcelain bust study of “The Apollo Belvedere” .

Crisply-modelled library or desk-top bust study of the god taken from the the life-size full-size marble statue exhibited in the Belvedere courtyard of the Vatican Museums, Rome , Italy .

The study produced and stamped by “ Art Union London February 1861” . The reverse also stamped by C.Delpech , probably the artist responsible for the interpretation.

‘Parian-ware’ porcelain was developed and produced to imitate the pure white marble from the Greek island of Paros , famed for the use of it’s stone for sculpture from antiquity.

The head of the god Apollo is depicted head turned , with his curled hair held in a fillet or cloth band , a cloak draped across his shoulders. The bust study mounted upon a turned circular socle base with original fixings . The Greek and Roman classical god Apollo was one of the Olympian deities , and revered and worshipped in both religions as a protector from evil .

In excellent condition with no damage or repairs.
