Superb Quality Late 19th Century Bronze Elephant on Marble Base by Franz Bergman

A late 19th century Austrian superb quality bronze of an elephant with young male rider on his back mounted on a marble base or dish by Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936) with Bergman marks to elephant.

This bronze consists of a superbly cast seated elephant with raised trunk with a cold painted young male rider holding a spear in his hand and seated on the elephant.

The elephant is supported by a circular & dished rouge marble base or dish, making the piece both a highly decorative and practical piece.

An identical example can be found in the book, 'Antique Vienna Bronzes' by Joseph Zobel, page 177

Franz Xavier Bergman was the son of Franz Bergman Senior who came to Vienna in 1860 and set up a small foundry producing fine quality cold painted bronzes particularly those of Oriental subjects and animals.

This bronze is in excellent condition for age and can go straight into a home or collection.
