19th century
Description

Léopold Eugène Kampf, (1822 - 1893). An interesting and amusing bronze figure of a dishevelled young man. He stands with a large smile on his face, wearing somewhat ill fitting clothes, and peaked cap. Set upon a chamfered square base.

Signed Kampf to the base.

Height - 43.3 cm, 17”.

Width - 11.7 cm, 4 1/2”

Depth - 10.9 cm, 4 1/4”.

Condition - Excellent. No repair.

Léopold Eugène Kampf was born in 1822. He attended military school at Saint Cyr and joined the army as an officer in the early 1840’s, where he held the ranks of Lieutenant and Colonel, seeing action in a number of campaigns. He used his experience of military life to create detailed sculptures of military figures. Kampf exhibited at the Paris Salon and many of his works were made at the Alfred Daubrée foundry. He produced a bronze bust for the tomb of Affry de la Monnaye, at the Père-Lachaise Cemetery.

The Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris, holds a further example of his work.
