Description

This is an antique parcel gilt carving of the Lion of Lucerne dating from around 1870. The Lion of Lucerne is a sculpture in Lucerne, Switzerland. It was designed by Bertel Thorvaldesen and made by Lukas Ahorn in 1821. The lion commemorates the Swiss Guards massacred during the French revolution in 1792 when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.

The lion is recumbent with a paw upon his shield. The lion has a beautiful patina to the solid oak and remnants of the original gilding remain. There is a slight loss to the carving at the base of the shield as photographed but not really that noticeable.

The lion has a very good colour and is expertly carved.

This measures 32 cms long 18 cms high by 15 cms wide.
