Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These Victorian display shelves in Regency Revival style consist of ebonised wood and painted timber finished in black. The upright structure incorporates four fixed shelves alongside an open tier configuration, featuring X-frame lattice sides, a moulded cornice at the top, and a solid plinth base at the bottom. Surface wear includes a nice patina and slightly shabby areas across the dark paintwork. Standing 200 cm high, 81 cm wide and 36 cm deep, this tall freestanding bookcase provides ample vertical storage capacity for books, decorative objects, and framed photographs. It suits placement within a gentleman's library, a home study, a living room, or a hallway, where the open shelving offers accessible display and organisation for everyday household items.

An etagere is a piece of furniture featuring open shelves supported by uprights, designed to display ornaments, ceramics, or books. Originating in 18th-century France and widely produced throughout the 19th century, these units provide open, lightweight storage solutions.

Traditional etageres were constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or painted softwoods. Frame construction often featured mortise and tenon joinery, cross-braced X-framing for lateral stability, and hand-cut mouldings on the cornice and base.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carved joinery, slotted iron fixings, and natural wear patterns on high-contact shelf surfaces. Original ebonised or painted finishes typically exhibit subtle craquelure, patination, or rubbing that exposes the underlying timber.

Position the shelf unit against a contrasting background to highlight its open structure and lattice detailing. Arrange items in balanced groups using ceramics, bound volumes, and small sculptures while preserving negative space to maintain an uncluttered aesthetic.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth without liquid polish or abrasive cleaners. Protect the finish from direct sunlight and avoid positioning the timber frame near radiator heat to prevent warping or paint flaking.
