Late C19th Italian carved alabaster "Grand Tour" souvenir sculpture , after the antique, "The Dying Gaul" in as found , country-house condition.

Well carved and good scale study of the ancient iconic sculpture of "The Dying Gaul" on an ovoid base . The defeated warrior depicted wounded and dying , lying upon his broken sword and shield , a horn around his feet and a torc around his neck . Naked except for a modesty fig-leaf now incorporated by the sculptor.

The Roman marble sculpture is thought to be copy of an ancient Hellenistic bronze original. The marble is now on display in the Capitoline Museums, Rome , Italy . This alabaster scale model copy would have been produced as a quality souvenir to sell to wealthy tourists completing the "Grand Tour" of the classical sights and sites of Europe.

Has suffered from historic damage and repairs but crucially is complete with no losses . Has various cracks , and amateur country-house repairs .
