P.j.mene: Bronze Sculpture of a Playful Whippet

19th century
Description

P. J. MENE: a charming mid-19th century BRONZE SCULPTURE of a whippet by this famous French animalier sculptor.

Very finely modelled and beautifully cast, the whippet is depicted on a carpet, with a ball ~ clearly waiting for someone to play the game! Signed to the base; good colour and patina. 6ins x 4.5ins; 3.75ins deep. (15.25 x 11.5 x 9.5cms)

***PIERRE JULES MENE (1810-1879), a leading member of the French 'animalier' movement, started work with his father, a metal turner, and by 1837 he was casting his own sculptures. He enjoyed great success as a sculptor and the quality of his work is comparable to the great Antoine Louis Barye (1796-1875) the most famous French animal sculptor of the 19th century.
