Description

Bouraine: A fine quality and stylish Art Deco period BRONZE SCULPTURE of "Penthesilea" (Queen of The Amazons).

She is modelled naked, holding a bow whilst recumbent on an angular base. Signed "Bouraine" to the base, together with the foundry (Susse Freres). 19ins long; 9ins high; 5ins deep. (48.25 x 23 x 12.75cms)

***Marcel Bouraine (1886-1948) was a important sculptor who studied under Joseph-Alexandre Falguière. He was captured in the 1914-1918 war and interned in Switzerland. Immediately after he returned to his great love, sculpture, and exhibited in Paris from 1922. He is considered to be one of the great influences of the Art Deco movement.

***(The Amazons had a number of queens, but Penthesilea was the most famous, leading her troops successfully in support of King Priamos at Troy.)
