Antique Late Georgian (1825) Pearlware Flowered Jug

This is a very beautiful late Georgian English porcelain Flowered Jug, decorated with sprays of boldly painted English garden flowers plus gilding. Under the spout the Jug is dated 1825. This must have been a Christening or Birthday present as it has also a superbly decorated pair of initials “BS”, or “BJ”, or possibly “BL” – how thrilled this person must have been to receive such a unique and thoughtful present. As it has been dated and initialed in this manner we believe that this Jug is probably unique: there will be no other copies – it was intended for the sole lucky recipient.

Condition: Very clean and crisp order, with surprisingly minor wear from use, including a small hair line at the base below the spout, commensurate with being almost 200 years old. No restoration at all.

This delightful Flowered Jug would make an ideal Christmas or Birthday present to any lady of the house who likes flowers, gardening and flower arranging.

This lovely antique jug was produced in the late Georgian era in 1825, just 10 years after Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo and exiled to St Helena. It is unmarked but was probably manufactured in the Potteries at Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. This was a period in history when Great Britain was achieving its apogee of power and wealth. The British Empire at its height was the largest empire in history and, for nearly a century, it was the foremost global power. The British Empire held sway over 400 million people, nearly a quarter of the world population at the time, and the Royal Navy was the most powerful navy in the world, Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson having defeated the French navy at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This wonderfully proportioned and decorated antique jug well represents the confidence and strength of this particular era.
