As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large, decorative and highly amusing lidded Koro by the highly acclaimed Miyao Eisuke company of Yokohama, arguably the most famous makers of gilded bronze export wares during the Meiji period 1868-1912 , the front panel of this very unusual lidded Koro depicts a Samurai archer beside a waterfall in a woodland setting, while the reverse depicts a songbird amidst native flora , the body of the vessel finely decorated with a stylised ground , geometric gilt borders and stylised floral detail, copper lined and stood upon four short feet styled as winged mythical beasts, the lid of the Koro similarly decorated to the body and surmounted by a lovely quality gilded and multi patinated figure depicting a well dressed boy parading a lantern in the breeze , both the Koro and the boy are fully signed, the Koro is held aloft by the pair of comical legendary fishermen Ashinaga and Tenaga, each dressed in finely detailed gilt decorated clothing, their skin and facial features once again multi patinated for effect , the facial expressions whilst they struggle lift this monumental vessel are fascinating, the seated Ashinaga once again signed with the Miyao Eisuke gilt tablet seal , finally the whole group stand upon their original Gold lacquered hardwood base which carries an old collectors or retailers label to the underside.
A large and high quality decorative group from arguably the greatest manufacturer of these wares during the late 19thc.
