Early C19th Carved White Statuary Marble Bust Study of Diana.

19th century
Description

Early C19th carved white statuary marble bust study of Diana .

Well-carved marble desktop or library bust study depicting Diana , goddess of the hunt , the moon and nature in Roman mythology. Equated with the Greek goddess Artemis , Diana was worshipped in ancient Roman religion.

This study is a head and shoulders portrayal taken from the over life-size scale marble statue "Diana of Versailles " , a 2nd century Roman version in the Greek tradition of iconography. This statue is housed in the collection of the Louvre Museum, Paris, France.

The head turned to dexter , the goddess has her hair tied into a bun wearing a diadem on her forehead. The shoulders are clothed in her traditional-style 'chiton' garment or robe.

Mounted upon its original turned marble socle.

Some minor wear from handling , and a minor nick to the nose tip . Good surface and patina.

Great classical piece of desk or library decoration.
