M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
The snout having minor rubbing and wear , from its association with luck being gained from touching it.

The Hellenistic marble original now exhibited in the Ufizzi Museum , Florence, Italy. The original ,found in Rome and removed to Florence by the Medici, was associated from the time of its discovery with the Calydonian Boar of Greek myth.

A fountain figure based on the original was sculpted and cast by Baroque master Pietro Tacca (1577-1640), and a version now stands as a tourist attraction in the Mercato Nuevo in Florence.
