Description

A C19th bronze sculpture of a victorious nude athlete, with his right arm raised triumphantly, his left hand holding a javelin and a robe draped over his arm; in a rich brown patina, raised

on a verde antique marble plinth. Signed 'H Arnoldt'. Hans Arnoldt, Berlin (1860 - 1913)

Victor statues were intended to immortalise successful athletes. Sculptors favoured bronze for athletic statues, perhaps because it better represented tanned, oiled skin.
