M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Produced with a heavily verdigris /'faux excavation' patina ,this iconic image of the horned ,bearded and tailed dancing mythical woodland 'faun' creature in ecstatic pose ,is mounted upon a circular unpolished thick grey slate base. The Pompeian discovery almost certainly being a Roman copy of an Hellenistic original . The raised arm has a slightly loose joint where the original pin has been set. A good large-scale, detailed casting probably produced by 'Chiurazzi et Fils ' Foundry ,Naples, Italy. Examples of this theatrical and visually-arresting bronze sculpture can be found adorning the great homes and gardens of the world .
