C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze sculpture after the antique "Apollo Belvedere". High quality large-scale bronze version of the celebrated marble figure from Classical Antiquity known as "Apollo Belvedere" or "Pythian Apollo". Re-discovered in Central Italy in the late C15th Rennaisance period, originally displayed in the 'Cortile della Statue' of the Belvedere Palace within the Vatican (hence its title),it is now housed in the Octagonal Court of the 'Museo Pio Clementino' ,Vatican ,Rome. The Greek god Apollo is depicted posed as an archer having just shot an arrow, possibly having just slain the serpent python guarding Delphi in Greek mythology . Portrayed in contrapposto stance , a robe or 'chlamys' draped around his neck and arm , his curled hair held in a 'strophium' , a band symbolic of gods and kings. he is entirely nude except for his sandals , a quiver of arrows across his left shoulder. Copies of this iconic image are present in some of the greatest public and private collections of the world. Excellent condition and good consistent patination . The statue mounted and raised upon a shallow black and white striated marble plinth base.
