Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Solid quarter-sawn oak with medullary rays: standard British cabinet work of the period.
Chairs designed to fit flush against the perimeter: typical 1920s space-saving design.
Clean geometric lines and shaped trestle uprights: fits Heal's 1920s workshop production.
Gentle natural oxidisation and handling wear to timber edges: consistent with true age.

This rare Arts and Crafts indoor dining set comprises a square table and four matching armchairs in warm oak from the 1920s. The solid timber construction displays a rich golden hue with a visible wood grain, featuring a square tabletop, an undertier shelf beneath the base, and chairs with continuous curved wooden backrests and cross stretchers between the legs. The drop-in seat pads are upholstered in a pale green fabric with minor water marks, complemented by straightforward wooden armrests and sturdy square legs. Measuring 74 cm in height by 94 cm in width and depth, the four armchairs fit snugly beneath the table when not in use. This compact configuration suits smaller dining rooms, kitchen eating areas, or breakfast nooks in an English country house or period interior. The set provides both comfortable seating and practical space-saving function for daily meals.

Furniture from this movement emphasises simple geometric forms, functional craftsmanship, and the natural grain of unadorned timber, particularly oak. Makers such as Heal & Son focused on utility, clean lines, and compact proportions suited to modern living.

These sets were primarily constructed from solid English or European oak, often finished with wax or clear lacquer to display the grain. Upholstery featured durable woven wool, linen, or leather fabrics.

Authentic pieces frequently bear an inlaid ivory or wooden makers disc, a stamped metal label, or a paper badge reading Heal & Son Ltd London. Look for distinctive construction details such as exposed joinery, sturdy stretchers, and space-saving chair designs.

Position the set as a central focal point against light, neutral walls to accentuate the warm wood tones. Pair with modern architectural pendant lighting and minimal tableware to balance the geometric lines of the furniture.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear bees wax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Wipe up liquid spills immediately and avoid placing hot items directly onto the wooden surface.
